When a new piece forms part of the museum´s collection, it is immediately considered an item of cultural value much like a patrimonial commodity which must be cared for by the institution, whose mission it is to protect it and assure its endurance in time. The item is submitted to the admissions protocol where it receives an inventory number, documentation and an evaluation of its conservation state. Then it is submitted to the conservation system of cleaning, restoration if necessary, and finally to storage where it will be kept stable in time. This last stage is defined by the conservation state of the item and its physical characteristics. If it is flat it may be hung, laid out in a drawer or rolled up. If it is 3 dimensional, it can be kept in boxes. All of the options are elaborated with inert and stable materials, appropriate for being in direct contact with fabrics. The storage deposits were designed under strict conservation standards that consider the stability and control of environmental conditions and the protection against contaminating elements and potential light damage. Apart from its first-rate installations, the institution also benefits from a crew of specialized professionals and technicians helping to achieve the before mentioned conditions. |
